Synopsis: Two Sisters in conflict travel through Europe towards a mystery destination in order to connect after so many years apart.

Review: Ines ( Alicia Vikander ) is contacted by her sister Emilie (Eva Green ) to reunite after so many years apart. After having many poor reviews for her work, Ines agrees and the two start travelling through Europe. Unknowingly to Ines, her sister has booked the two of them to stay at a large mansion for those who want to commit suicide. When Ines asks why Emilie has brought her to this place, Emilie reveals that she has terminal cancer and has chosen to end her life in five days.

Alicia Vikander

Alicia Vikander’s performance is great and I am very satisfied with her work. The only critique I could add is that this script does not offer Alicia Vikander more opportunities to show her full range. The film The Danish Girl (2015) with Eddie Redmayne gives us a lot to take in from the complex story. In that movie we see a whole lot of range from Alicia Vikander, showing us why she is a great actress. Another good film is The Light Between Oceans (2016) with Michael Fassbender and Rachel Weisz. That movie also showed us a great deal of range from Alicia Vikander. I consider these three movies to be some of her better performances. For this particular film, the only down side is the script.

Eva Green as Emilie.

Emilie

Eva Green

Eva Green is always amazing as usual. She does really well in this film. When she gets angry and vindictive, her performance is full of venom. I love what she does in her movies but nothing will ever beat her role as Morgan in STARZ Camelot. With her Character’s attitude toward her sister, she tends to carry the story a bit more than Alicia Vikander’s character. Here we have Eva Green being the active protagonist that pushes the stories narratives and sets the stage for the emotional drama that every other character will feel. She is a strong enough actress who is able to do get the job done and I love that.

and Eva Green

The film focuses on the experience of facing the real world. For Ines, she can no longer run away from her emotions and stays in her introverted world. This is very dramatizing for her having to deal with the real world as an adult instead of hiding away like a child. She learns the consequences of not being there for her family when they needed her and how she has hurt the ones she loves with her absence. Her excuses is that she had her own life to live, but that argument falls apart very quickly when she sees how her dying sister is deteriorated right in front of her due to the terminal cancer taking its effect. We have an Oscar bait sappy tear jerker ladies and gentlemen, and not a very good one either. The film brings us into the life of the main protagonist only when both Alicia Vikander’s and Eva Green’s characters are completely stuffed with emotion like a loaded spring, ready to explode! This movie is so forced that it feels inauthentic at times. I have mentioned in other reviews that big name celebrities have the power to take scripts with no real substance and turn these tin cans into gold. I really think the only reason this movie even got green lit was because of these two amazing actresses.

Not a

Bad Film

The cinematography is highly inconsistent. Sometimes the camera work is perfect and sometimes the camera is tilted downward in a very strange angle that doesn’t flow with the rest of the movie. There is also some very irritating stylistic fisheye blurred effect in some of the backgrounds that hurts your eyes and makes you feel dizzy when staring at it. If Hollywood is avoiding certain fads and trends, it’s probably for a good reason. The camera sometimes pans left to right in a sea sickness like motion making you wonder what the hell is wrong with this director. The lighting is perfect some of the time and a bit washed out other times. Overall lighting is great. The color, set dressing, wardrobe, and backgrounds are great. This movie looks very high quality and damn near perfect. It’s just the camera work, only work some of the time. The movie its self is not a bad film but also not that great. This is definitely not for everyone. Some of you will get very bored watching this unless you have some similar experiences that can connect you to the story such as a family member with cancer or a parent’s death and one of the siblings chooses not to come to the parent’s funeral. This film is very average, watch it if you’re a fan of these two actresses.
