Synopsis: A group of corrupt cops plan to pull off their biggest heist yet but in order to get the job done they need to kill a good guy as a decoy.
Review: A group of crooked cops in league with the Jewish Mafia take on one last mission before they are out of the underground business for good, or so they think. After completing a bank robbery where they still an important item ( MacGuffin ) they are contacted by the mob and are tolled to find another item ( another MacGuffin ) in returned, their mob ties will finally be cut for good. Their goal is to retrieve an item from a secure government facility and to do that they must kill one of the good guys to keep the police from converging on their location.
One of Gal Gadot’s minor roles. She does so much better as a main protagonist rather than a side character. Although the film works very well the way it is, I wish we got to see Gal Gadot way more then the screen time the director gave her. Woody Harrelson does a good job in this film. You can see shades of his character Haymitch Abernathy in this movie with the veteran knowledge and drinking problem in the film The Hunger Games (2012). When he is being serious and not trying to be an incidental joke character, he works better in films.
This is an example of drama vs. action. Most cop TV shows such as The Shield on FX network (TV series 2002-2008) are in the drama section of media while war films are usually on the action side of the field, here we get tons of character development. This film does not seem to have much plot amour unlike typical action films. Everyone can shoot at Arnold Schwarzenegger, but no one can hit him. In this film good guys that you like can die as a reflection of realism. This makes you feel a bit vulnerable, cautious, and excited all at the same time while watching the movie. This is a great example of why drama films tent to age well while action films age awfully and are usually turned into jokes and internet memes.
This film seems similar to so many films that I have seen before like Confidence (2003) with Rachel Weisz and Star Wars ROUGE ONE (2016) with Felicity Jones, typical heist films but most of all the film Training Day (2001) with Ethan Hawk and Denzel Washington. I mentioned earlier something called “McGuffins” which are basically in-movie items important to the movies characters but not the audience, these items give the characters something to go after and “push” or “trigger” the plot. Luckily for the audience this film uses every attempt to build the characters while the characters go after their objectives. This is appreciated more so in the genre of drama rather than the simple minded and child like “action” films that some Star Wars fan boys wanted from the film The Last Jedi (2018) instead of a mature and sophisticated story that will age well.
The cinematography for this film was great. You feel a real sense of danger and raw reality. The lighting, backgrounds, set dressing, and wardrobe work very well for this kind of film. You can tell that a lot of thought went into this movie. There are some things that are looked over but for what this movie is, its very good. I do appreciate the character development in this film and how the director pushed the story forward. If you like good action in films and want to see a suspenseful movie than give this one a go. This movie is way better than average.
