The best Celebrity TV Shows ever.
The Danish Girl (2015)
Score: 9/10
Director: Tom Hooper
Stars: Alicia Vikander, Eddie Redmayne, Amber Heard, Emerald Fennell.
Synopsis: The love story of Einar and Gerda, two painters living in Copenhagen, Denmark, 1926.
Review: A young woman named Gerda (Alicia Vikander ) is an aspiring painter looking for fame. Her husband is a popular painter and sells a lot of his work. Gerda’s husband is suffering mentally and is going down a path that leaves Gerda in a depressing state of mind. He seeks help from doctors but finds none. His wife Gerda looks for help from a doctor who is trying to perfect a very dangerous and new operation in the year of 1926, gender reassignment surgery.
Alicia Vikander does really well in this movie. Her acting is very natural and real. Her performance is not forced, it flows, and her responses seem very realistic. I like this actresses look and range. I also like the unique movies that she plays in. I said before on another website British Actress Blog that Eddie Redmayne is one of the best male actors in recent times. His performance in this movie was absolutely perfect. He gave it his all in this movie. This guy seems to have limitless range. Still nothing beats his perfect performance as Stephen Hawking in the film I gave a perfect score, The Theory of Everything (2014).
The film focuses on the concept of gender dysphoria. So many people on this planet all throughout history have suffered from this state of mind. I think it was worse for the character Einar because he was in the 1920’s where any semblance of homosexuality was looked at not only as a mental illness, but a crime against morality as well. You just can’t help but feel sorry for this character since the doctors of the time where so brutal in their medicine and beliefs. I am reminded of the film Stonehearst Asylum (2014) with Kate Bechinsale, David Thewlis, Ben Kingsley, and Michael Caine. In that movie the doctors are very brutal to the mental patients as well.
The cinematography is damn near perfect. The musical score is perfect. It really does bring out the actual emotion of the scenes. The set dressing, backgrounds, and wardrobe are all very high quality. This is a top notch film that makes you feel as though you are in the 1920’s. This is more of a sad movie rather than a happy film. Many people who can identify with the character Einar will not have a good feeling after watching this film. For a very realistic look at the world or if you’re into vintage movies give this film a watch. If you’re looking for a happy film I suggest Ballet Shoes (2007) with Emma Watson and Emilia Fox. As for this film, it’s very good and well above average.
