Tomb Raider (2018)
Score: 7/10
Director: Roar Uthaug
Stars: Alicia Vikander, Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Derek Jacobi, Daniel Wu.
Synopsis: A young woman learns of her father’s fate and seeks out an ancient threat that could jeopardize the world.
Review: A young woman named Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander ) is working as a delivery girl and is practicing mixed martial arts on the side. She learns of some information on her missing father and like any typical Indiana Jones “inspired” film, searches for her father all the while not listening to a word he says. She boards a boat and sets sail on her journey.
I have been a hardcore Tomb Raider fan since the 90’s ( I sound old ). I played hours of the stuff, although I could have done something better with my time. I consider myself an expert on all things Tomb Raider ( like that’s something to be proud of ). Alicia Vikander makes this role work well. I like how she gradually learns and becomes better at her skills. She has a body that is appropriate for someone who climbs mountains, does gymnastics, stunts, martial arts, and athletic bike racing. She is nicely toned, not to big, has a good tan, and still can be a lady when she wants to. I love it. Alicia Vikander has some range. The Film The Light Between Oceans (2016) with Rachel Weisz and Michael Fassbender, had Alicia Vikander playing a character who was much more motherly and softer. In this film she is a straight up warrior. Daniel Wu’s character is fully loaded with plot armor. I’m not kidding, he really should be dead yet lives on multiple occasions. The same can be said for Lara and I won’t spoil the movie here, but really, he doesn’t even have a single scratch on him after wards while Lara is wearing bandages at least.
The film focuses on the concept of action. Just Pure unadulterated action with loads of plot armor, very stupid enemies with the IQ of a doorknob, who conveniently miss their targets in order for the movie to last two hours, and are completely incompetent. Hence forth our main female protagonist can live long enough to complete her objectives. That’s pretty much all you need to know. Its very fun to watch though.
The cinematography is well done. The lighting, set dressing, backgrounds, and wardrobe are all well done. So many scenes in this film are taken from the videos games. Usually movies made from video games are historically horrible but this movie is the exception. The movie is still a typical action film but the action clichés here are hilarious. Some characters should absolutely be dead but are fine in the next scene. You just can’t help but laugh. This is an alright film to watch, way better than average.
