Synopsis: An undercover agent is on a mission in Berlin during the Cold War. Her objective is to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents.

Review: A deep cover operative named Lorraine Broughton ( Charlize Theron ) is sent on a mission in Berlin during the Cold War in order to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a valuable list of double agents. She teams up with David Percival (James McAvoy ) a fellow agent to help her complete her mission. Together they both engage deadly enemies and uncover the truth behind the death of the fallen agent.

Charlize Theron does well in this film but this is the worst fake British accent she has ever done in a movie. Her British accent in the films Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) and The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016) was way better. Her voice sounds phoned in. As for the rest of her performance, I am of course reminded of Aeon Flux (2005). These two movies have Charlize Theron playing a secret agent that does lots of hand to hand combat and are great at slipping of tricky situations. One character lives in the past while the other lives on the future. I have always been a fan of James McAvoy’s work Children of Dune (2003 TV Mini-Series) to X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), I consider him to be one of the best male actors of recent times. Of course the film Split (2016) shows his dynamic acting range.

As with most spy thrillers, the film focuses on the concept of nothing is what it seems. Like the spy movies Nothing but the truth (2008), The Bourne Legacy (2012), and The Recruit (2003), the films have many plot twist that are very predictable. The main protagonist in this film is way too trusting. She even allows herself to fall in love in the middle of a top secret mission. In the film The Recruit (2003), Colin Farrell’s character “James Douglas Clayton” is captured as part of the CIA training. He doesn’t know that this is a training exercise and some agents tell him that they took the girl that she was with Layla Moore ( Bridget Moynahan ) and that they killed her.

This is the breaking point for James and he gives the Russian what they want. Al Pacino’s character “Walter Burke” stops the training exercise and reveals that it was just a test and that a CIA spy is vulnerable when someone they love is in jeopardy. Bottom line is that Charlize Theron’s character “Lorraine Broughton” was very irresponsible to pull Sofia Boutella’s character “Delphine Lasalle” into danger the way she did. If you watch the ending of the film you will understand why I make the comparison between the two movies.

Interesting

Film

The cinematography is good. Sometimes we get the one long take where Charlize Theron is fighting and sometimes we get stylistic shots of Charlize Theron in an ice bath. Over all its OK. The lighting is too dark in some parts of the film, just OK in other parts of the film, and stylistically great in other parts of the film. Strangely the lighting is very inconsistent. The wardrobe is just fine, since it’s depicting the real world. The set dressing and backgrounds are fine back not amazing. Over all the film leans more into the fantasy side of spy thrillers. The movie is like a cross between Bourne films and a B-movie spy thriller. This movie would not have done well if it weren’t for the A-list celebrities acting abilities and charm. Some of the scenes in this film feel forced, like the creators of this movie just had to put in some scenes just to prove a point. It’s cheesy and ruins the seriousness of the movie, but movies are suppose to be fun, so if you liked it great. Over all, the movie is watchable. In general spy films are not for everyone, but this one is just OK. An above average spy film.
