Synopsis: When a Blackhat hacker named Cipher blackmails Dom into attacking the nation’s security, he will do whatever it takes to keep his family safe, even at the cost of his reputation.

Review: While on his honeymoon in Cuba, Dominic Toretto ( Vin Diesel ) is approached by an elite hacker named Cipher ( Charlize Theron ) and is blackmailed into stealing a nuclear submarine. His team of good guys refuses to believe that he went rouge and try to stop Cipher. In order to stop the bad guys Dominic Toretto uses every ally he knows to help him prevent a weapon of mass destruction from being used and with the help of his friends, they will try to stop a major threat to national security.

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron does well for the character she is playing. She is not the typical bad guy hacker but Hollywood is notorious for getting hacker characters and their hacking methods wrong. She has a more passive role in this film rather than the action packed roles of films like Atomic Blonde (2017) and Aeon Flux (2005). She plays a charming manipulator. The name “Cipher” is one of the most over used names for hackers and shadow organizations in movies and videos games. You would think that the creators of this film would use a name that is a little more creative but, oh well. Michelle Rodriguez seems to play the same character over and over again. I’d like to see more range from this actress but so far all I get is her being tough like in the films Machete (2010), the TV show Lost, S.W.A.T. (2003), and Resident Evil (2002). I like the tough girl characters in films a lot but seriously, it’s just the same thing over and over again and its very predictable. She still gets work in Hollywood so I guess it works for her. These are the kind of roles that were made for Vin Diesel. From The Fast and the Furious (2001) to xXx (2002), he does this stuff right. His other performances in movies like the Boiler Room (2000) don’t really hit the mark for me. Dwayne Johnson has come a long way from The Mummy Returns. Here he is just The Rock from wrestling but has a job as a good guy. For an action film like this his role is appropriate and his acting is just competent.

This movie is the most notorious offender of plot armor I have ever seen in my life. There are Kung fu films that are not even in the same ball park as this film. Even the movie Collide (2016) with Felicity Jones is nowhere close to the unrealistic physics of this movie. I used to think that The Transporter (2002) film with Jason Statham was totally out their but even he is in this movie. So the creators of this movie made a shameless action film and they turned up the heat up to maximum!

Every possible movie cliché is crammed into this one movie like a can of sardines. This is the most ridiculous story I have seen in a very long time. I’m really not into the whole action movie genre and if you have read my other reviews on action films, you know that I am usually very harsh on these films. You really do have to suspend your understanding of physics you watch this movie. You can take a wild guess that the computer hacking is super fake and the product of Hollywood. This movie shares some similarities with the film Blackhat (2015) with Chris Hemsworth and that was a really bad movie.

Interesting

Film

The cinematography is very good. The lighting, set dressing, backgrounds, color, and wardrobe are all done very well. This movie is just a big budget Hollywood blockbuster. Again, you really have to suspend your disbelief of physics and just enjoy the film. For a more realistic action film watch Triple 9 (2016) with Gal Gadot and Norman Reedus. As for this movie, it’s fun to watch but its not for everyone. The movie is above average for an action film, nothing more.
