The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016)
Score: 7/10
Director: Cedric Nicolas-Troyan
Stars: Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, Chris Hemsworth.
Synopsis: Eric and his wife Sara are raised as members of the ice Queen Freya's army known as the Huntsmen, together they try to conceal their forbidden love as they fight to withstand the wicked attacks of both Freya and her evil sister Ravenna.
Review: Years ago when Eric ( Chris Hemsworth ) was a young boy, he and the rest of the village children were taken away from their families by the ice Queen Freya's orders ( Emily Blunt ). She builds an army of child soldiers who will grow up learning the art of combat. Fast forward to adult hood and the army is a highly trained group of killers with incredible talent.
Emily Blunt is a great British actress that does very well in this film and the rest of her films in general. I love the range that this actress has. She can be a lady in one film and then be a warrior in another like the movie Edge of Tomorrow (2014) with Tom Cruise. I love that versatility a lot and I tend to write about actresses who have this kind of acting talent. Charlize Theron is one of the worlds ultimate enchantresses. Its great to have some of my favorite actresses in the same movie together. I had a lot of fun watching these two on camera. I think this was a stroke of genius casting these two. As for the last film with Kristen Stewart, I like her a lot and I am definitely a fan of hers but I'm glade she is not in this film. Veteran actors usually ( not all the time ) have the ability to take a very simplistic concept and brig out the best in the film ( turning tin cans into gold ).
The film focuses on the concept of love. This is not bad for a fairy tail movie such as this. The ice Queen represents a world devoid of love, while Ravenna represents a world of deceit and treachery. Honestly this film is way better than the last one and has more focus. Since this film is aimed at children the movie tends to work more than a serious film marketed to adults.
The cinematography is very well done. The lighting, set dressing, backgrounds, and wardrobe are all top quality. The graphics are great, when Freya uses her ice it looks very well done. This fantasy world is an improvement from the last film ( same world obviously ). We get to see more dwarfs this time females, which in its self is not really the world of fantasy at all. There are many people born with dwarfism in real life. As for the story, it was getting really repetitive when Jessica Chastain’s character was still angry even when she learned that she had been deceived. I don’t want to spoil the film but suffice to say, Instead of the plot and story movie forward as we see our heroes take on adversity, we get a plot point that drags on and irritates. The movie was good to watch besides that part of the film. If your into Lord of the Rings style fantasy movies than give this film a watch. This is an above average film.
