The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)
Score: 7/10
Director: Guy Ritchie
Stars: Alicia Vikander, Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Elizabeth Debicki , Hugh Grant.
Synopsis: In the 1960s, a CIA agent known as Solo and KGB operative named Illya Kuryakin participate in a joint mission. Their mission is to stop a criminal organization that is working to create nuclear weapons.
Review: A CIA agent named Napoleon Solo ( Henry Cavill ) is tasked with getting a V.I.P. across the Berlin wall. While on the mission they are attacked but survive and Solo completes the mission. After he completes his mission, he is tasked with a new joint mission where he is given a partner to work with, the KGB operative Illya Kuryakin ( Armie Hammer ) who attacked him on his mission earlier. The two agree to work together because their bosses told them to. Their mission objective is to recover a disk containing information on an atomic weapon and stop the criminal organization.
Alicia Vikander does well in this movie but she has done better in films like The Danish Girl (2015), Tomb Raider (2018), and The light Between Oceans (2016). In those movies she had more emotion and personality in her character. For some reason these spy women roles are played heartless and emotionless most of the time. Bridget Moynahan plays a character named “Layla Moore” in the spy thriller The Recruit (2003) plays a manipulative character but she is still very much human. I get that it’s necessary for the character to dehumanize themselves in order to kill to survival and complete their objective, but these roles don’t really bring out the actresses true talent as much as I want it to. As for what we got here, she did the job but I was wanting for more. Henry Cavill’s character reminds me of the Archer (TV series). He is serious, ironic, sarcastic, and has dry sense of humor. He plays the stereotypical alpha spy very well. It’s good to see the comedic side of his acting range once in a while.
This movie is similar to Atomic Blonde (2017) with Charlize Theron and James McAvoy. We have spies doing amazing hand to hand combat all the while their conflicts are take place around the Berlin wall. Both films are stylistic, the main characters are charming, attractive, and incredible at what they do. We have one protagonist that is male in this movie and one protagonist that is female in Atomic Blonde (2017). In both films the main characters are after a McGuffin ( basically an in movie item that the main character must find but the audience doesn’t care about ) whether it’s a list of double agents or a disk about atomic weapons. I have said before that these spy thrillers are more that same than they are different but at the very least with these two movies, they are very entertaining.
The cinematography is perfect. The lighting, set dressing, backgrounds, and wardrobe are all very well done. This movie was entertaining all the way through. Even the scenes where the characters are doing a lot of talking are perfectly shot with amazing color. There are so many plot twists in this movie that it is always interesting. This movie is listed under action, adventure, and “comedy” but it’s really not a very funny movie, just light hearted and very well done. You can’t take a movie like this seriously so just sit back and enjoy the satire film. Watch this average film if you are bored.
