Score: 9/10
Director: Bryan Singer
Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Peter Dinklage, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Famke Janssen, Evan Peters.
Synopsis: In an effort to avert the total end of mutant kind, Wolverine is sent into the past to change the outcome of a post apocalyptic future.
Review: In a dystopian future, mutants and the humans who help them are exterminated by powerful robots called Sentinel. Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart ) and Magneto (Ian McKellen ) devise a way to send Wolverine ( Hugh Jackman ) into the past so that he can find Professor Xavier’s younger self and begin changing the future. Their first objective is to find Mystique and prevent her from being captured.
Jennifer Lawrence shows a much more serious side of her acting in this film compared to the last film X-Men: First Class (2011), where she played a character that was happier and much more friendly. This is a step up in her performance that is greatly appreciated. It’s amazing to see this top notch A-list cast. There was so much talent in one film and their performances definitely helped make this science fiction story work. It’s interesting to see Patrick Stewart in another time travel flick within a major franchise like his role in Star Trek: First Contact (1996).
The film focuses in the concepts of standing your ground and moral panic. The character of young Professor Xavier is always telling Mystique to not let the enemy change who you are. By setting a good example for people to see, will change their ideas that you are dangerous. This brings us to the philosophical idea of moral panic. It’s well known that the X-Men movies has been an allegory for the lgbtq community and the moral panic they had to endure from people who are afraid of other people who are different. Regardless of the fact that this series is science fiction, it’s still a reflection of real life.
I wish Quicksilver was not in this movie because he is too overpowered. One would ask why the good guys didn’t keep him around since they could have definitely used his over powered abilities. Quicksilver off balances these movies with his presents and if he is killed off, its feels forced and takes you out of the movie since their really isn’t anyway anyone in these films can actually kill him. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) didn’t make any kind of since with him and X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) did almost as bad with him looking at his battle with Apocalypse.
I loved the use of both time lines of the past and the future cohesively. That was very well done on the movie creator’s part. So far this is a major high point for the X-men movies. I enjoyed this one better than X-Men apocalypse, all though that film was very entertaining as well. The film takes enough time to develop the characters more and at the same time give us plenty of action scenes. I appreciate how the film balances out the two elements. This movie was above average and worth a watch.
