This is my favorite Merlin character. Joseph Fiennes does a great job at playing a very mysterious version of Merlin over the more typical overtly wizard like white bearded old man that we are used to seeing in the Arthurian legend. He has a very dark past which I love. Still, with this show we are able to find mystery in the character even hundreds of years after the legend was born. His powers cost him dearly. That is something not usually explored in other Arthurian media. Joseph Fiennes definitely has a sort of charisma about him. When you see him as Merlin you can’t help but wonder who is this guy? Why is he dresses like that? Is that a scare on the side of his face? When did he get it? What happened? He has a past and not just a convenient wizard.

I like his interaction with the other characters. When he speaks to Lady Igraine, its like they are old friends having a real conversation and not two actors playing a role in front of a camera. Merlin knows when to be tough and when to be a gentle men. He has a nice balance about him. He also uses judgment and understands that if you just start using magic at a whim, you may cause an unfortunate chain reaction of events that can come back and haunt you , at least most of the time that is. Unlike a lot of other Arthurian media, Merlin in this show knows that you should not delve into the other side thinking that you will not pay a price. As he said in the show ‘They cost’ - Merlin. He has to engineer physical ways of solving problems on top of using magic in order to keep a balance between the spiritual and the physical worlds and this does not always work out. Bottom line is, this is a well thought out character and I wish I could see more of this Merlin. Thank you Joseph Fiennes! In my opinion you are the best Merlin!
